"Settling in"
24" x 36" - Gypsum on a custom-made cradled hardboard with a locally made White Birch frame. Hanging hardware included.
Settling in is simplicity in its finest. Three hand-carved life-sized trout positioned in a soft white negative space. Becca loves to give her fish ample negative space, to allow for interpretation and imagination. This piece represents settling in, getting cozy, and finding peace in everyday moments. What do you see?
Becca's fishscapes are inspired by many hours spent as a child watching fish under the dock, or through the ice. She used to do this for so long that she would see swimming fish when she closed her eyes to sleep. These works honour those memories, and remind you to let your imagination run wild. The negative space backgrounds are metaphors for the inner conscience and imagination. All fishscapes take on a new life depending on the lighting. In low-light conditions, shadows of each fish appear and make the work very dynamic.
Becca's fishscapes have been described as being meditative, calming, energizing and grounding. She affectionately calls them her "living fossils" - preserving memories and nostalgia in stone, but still very much alive.
